Moms Sunglasses – Luxury vs Affordable?
Mom sunglasses. What does this even mean? For me, it means you never know when little (or big) hands might get hold of them… The big hands in this case referring to my teenage (basically a young adult) daughter.
So I decided to give you guys some reasons why I think you should or should not buy luxury Mom sunglasses… The verdict: read until the end to find out.
Before we really get into the topic, I am collaborating with the guys at Civion on this post and they are offering you guys a 10% coupon code JOHLENE10 on any of the items on their site. They ship worldwide! The sunglasses I’m wearing in the photos are their 90´s oval frame sunglasses.
WHY YOU TOTALLY SHOULD!
Theoretically, they last longer
Of course, this is only a theory, because I´m sure that if a hard block of cement falls on them, both pairs will instantly break and it won’t matter if they were Chanel or if they were the more affordable kind 🙂 However, in more mundane circumstances, it can only be better to have luxury sunglasses for the long run, because you don’t need to continuously buy new ones.
The promise of better quality
Expensive brands promise us better quality; “they protect your eyes from the sun better”, they scratch less easily, “the materials they are made of are normally a much better quality” And let´s face it, who doesn´t want to feel like they´ve invested in something of supreme value? I know I do.
Because you´re worth it!
Says the people who work at L´Oreal, and heck I believe it too! We do A LOT as Moms, and then some! We deserve to feel glamorous, even if what makes us feel that way is a pair of luxury sunglasses, right? RIGHT?
Before we go into the reason why you should not buy a pair of luxury sunglasses, I wanted to tell you guys where these photos were taken. They were shot in Mesa y Lopez in the city centre of Las Palmas here in Gran Canaria where we live. It´s a great place for shopping or grabbing a bite to eat 🙂
WHY YOU SHOULD NOT!
They are way too expensive
As mothers, buying or even attempting to save for a pair of luxury sunglasses is nearly impossible. Priorities. We have priorities. That word that starts with a “P” that we all loathe. Before we can think of buying something that extravagant we must first consider our budget and what is a necessity before splurging on a “wantity”.
Chances are they might break
Us moms, we are busy bees and are normally out and about doing whatever it is we do every day. What if we forgot about our pair of luxury sunglasses and then something happened to them… Will you be able to forgive yourself? I know that sounds melodramatic but it´s a fact! I know I´d be so upset.
Seasonal are seasonal
Unless you´re going to buy a pair that is timeless, chances are you going to forget about your luxury pair when it goes out of fashion. Granted us Moms might hang in there for another season, but then what?
WHAT´S THE VERDICT?
Do what feels right to you and what you can afford. Don´t splurge if you don´t have the money, but if you do and you´ve been eying that pair of sunglasses for awhile now, then go for it. You only live once. Be wise though and only spend what you have.
My next fashion post will probably be something in lines of transitioning from Summer to Fall without breaking the bank. If you guys have any ideas for a post like that, please feel free to let me know in the comments below. I´d love to see your suggestions!
Btw the top I´m wearing in these photos is from Zara.
Have a superrr week!

I often get asked what camera I use for my blog photos. I use the Canon T3i/600D EOS (with the Canon STM 50mm 1.8 lens). I would like to upgrade to the Canon EOS 5D Mark III (however my budget does not allow for it yet) because of its full frame (22MP full frame CMOS) sensor capacity. My current camera has a cropped frame which means I need to stand further away from my subject when I shoot.
Then, I use the Osmos DJI Mobile for my videos/vlogs. I love the Osmo Mobile because you control it via an app on any Android or IOS phone. It seriously has changed the way my travel videos look! Some of its features are:
- Active Track technology, automatically keep your smart phone facing you as you move
- Smooths and even cancels out the movements you make, stopping camera shake and turning every shot into a cinematic video!
Here are a few photos of me and hubby using the Osmo Mobile

You look so fab in these shades…it makes me want to buy a nice pair! I recently snagged a $20 pair at Target, because my last pair of nice glasses wound up in a public toilet, compliments of a child. Sigh. I’m with you, though, that as moms we do SO much and we absolutely deserve a little slice of luxury once in a while….to include some nicer shades. 🙂 Maybe next summer I’ll take that plunge!
I´ve been eying a pair of Chanel sunglasses for a while now but I just haven´t been able to take the step to buy them… It´s hard when you´re a Mom. I always feel like I could do something else with the money… 🙂
Haha! I totally understand this post as Laura has had the same debate about sunglasses. In the end, she has a fancy pair and a cheap pair…and she wears the one that fits the occasion. (As in, if Robbie is anywhere near, then it’s likely the cheap pair. He has a fascination with sunglasses these days!)
I think that´s very wise! The problem with me is that if I find a pair of sunglasses that fits comfortably, I like to wear it all the time (meaning the 300€ pair of Chanel sunglasses) and that´s risky as we all know… 🙂
