Las Canteras beach is one of the main reasons why I love the city of Las Palmas (the capital of Gran Canaria). This urban beach is always buzzing with people looking for sunshine, sea, beach, and something to eat. It´s a place where you want to be!
Here are 6 reasons why you´re probably going to want to visit it!
1. Good Vibes
Las Canteras has the most amazing vibe. It´s packed with places to eat (breakfast, lunch or dinner) from the morning to late at night, or to enjoy a cocktail while watching the sun go down. Every one of our visitors from afar, who we´ve taken here, loves it. It´s impossible not to.
If you like sun, sea, and beach together with great views, fun, and loads of ambiance, this is the PLACE TO BE!
2. Beach Sand Art
This massive beach sand art (in the photo above) is nothing out of the ordinary in Las Canteras. During Christmas time the whole belén (nativity scene) is created with beach sand and different sand-artists participate from all over the world. It is incredible to see!
3. Snorkeling
Las Canteras beach is also great for snorkeling. When it´s low tide we love to snorkel to La Barra (a sedimentary rock of sandstone and calcareous depositions thatruns parallel to the shore, providing shelter against the northern waves and giving it a personality of its own), especially on a day when the water is crystal clear. We haven´t done it for awhile and sitting here, writing this post, I can´t think of any reason why we have not…
4. Family Orientated
Las Canteras is a great beach for families. I mean, come on, how many beaches do you know that has several parks for kids? We often see families having picnics on the sand (this beach is epic for sundowner picnics – super romantic too!) or playing games like cards or dominoes.
5. Amazing Views
Just sitting on the boardwalk, sipping your favourite cuppa, is enough. We often come here early on Saturdays, when there are hardly people around, to soak up the early rays of morning sunlight and to reflect on the beauty of our surroundings.
6. Parking
We live approx 15 minutes by car from Las Canteras beach in a town called Santa Brígida. Parking in Las Palmas is a nightmare but the good thing is that there are numerous underground parking lots close by. We normally park in one called Parking de la Puntilla which is really close to the boardwalk of Las Canteras beach. This saves us valuable time to look for parking and it´s easy to get back to when we have had enough of the sun.
Las Canteras host a good selection of apartments as well as hotels. Some of my favourites are the Reina Isabel, a four-star hotel right on the beach and if you want to go for even more luxury, you can stay at the Hotel Sercotel Cristina, a 5-star luxury hotel with incredible views! Both of these hotels can be booked via booking.com. I also like to use TripAdvisor to search for hotels, places to eat, etc and I love using their app on my mobile phone too!
The best way to visit Las Canteras beach is to take a direct flight with Vueling or Iberia from one of the major cities in Spain (for example Madrid or Barcelona) to Las Palmas, Gran Canaria. Once you arrive at the Gran Canaria airport, you can take the #60 bus (Guagua, as the locals like to call it here), a taxi (the taxis are quite cheap here!) or rent a car via Goldcar (they have excellent rates) or one of the other rent-a-car companies situated at the airport.
Until next time guys! Let me know in the comments below what your favourite urban beach is to go to, and if you have visited Las Canteras beach before?

RESOURCES
I often get asked about the equipment I use when traveling. I mean this is the only real thing you´ll keep from your trip and therefore it needs to be really good! The camera I use for my blog photos is the Canon T3i/600D EOS (with the Canon STM 50mm 1.8 lens). I would like to upgrade to the Canon EOS 5D Mark III (however my budget does not allow for it yet) because of its full frame (22MP full frame CMOS) sensor capacity. My current camera has a cropped frame which means I need to stand further away from my subject when I shoot.
Then, I use the Osmos DJI Mobile for my videos/vlogs. I love the Osmo Mobile because you control it via an app on any Android or IOS phone. It seriously has changed the way my travel videos look! Some of its features are:
- Active Track technology, automatically keep your smart phone facing you as you move
- Smooths and even cancels out the movements you make, stopping camera shake and turning every shot into a cinematic video!

I like an urban beach too although I haven’t been here. My favourite urban beaches would have to be those in the south of France – at Nice and Cannes. Thanks for sharing on #FarawayFiles

True story, because after you´ve taken forever to create it, there´s the upkeep…

It’s strange to live here because although it´s an island we still carry on with daily life and most of the time I forget I that I live on one 😉

I love the vibe at Las Canteras Beach! That looks like a wonderful place to escape the city life for a bit and just relax in the sun. Plus, the sand art! Now if only it was just a little bit closer to upstate New York… 🙂
