Experience the magic of Basel at Christmas (Christmas in Switzerland). The two main Christmas markets in Basel are the Barfüsserplatz Christmas Market and the Münsterplatz Christmas Market, both offering festive experiences in the heart of the city.
Basel is nestled at the intersection of three countries—Switzerland, Germany, and France—and offers a unique holiday experience where medieval streets transform into a winter wonderland filled with handcrafted gifts, seasonal treats, and charming decorations.

Basel Christmas Markets
1. Münsterplatz Christmas Market
This Christmas market feels especially festive, with a huge Christmas tree and fairy lights twinkling above the wooden stalls. It’s also where we had the most delicious crispy potato fritters—soft on the inside and covered in the sauce of your choice. We went with applesauce, which perfectly contrasted the salty, crispy fritter.
Don’t forget to take one of their ceramic mugs home as a souvenir after enjoying your mulled wine. They also offer a warm, non-alcoholic spiced apple drink that’s perfect for the whole family.
- Location: Situated in Münsterplatz, right by the Basel Münster (cathedral), this market offers breathtaking views of both the city and the scenic Rhine River.
- Dates & Opening Times: This market runs from November 28 to December 23, 2024, with the usual opening hours of 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily.
- What else to try:
- Raclette: A Swiss classic, with melted cheese served over potatoes or bread, often accompanied by pickles.
- Fondue: Enjoy a warm, melted cheese fondue, perfect for dipping bread or vegetables.
- Swiss Pastries: Indulge in sweet Swiss pastries, such as Nusstorte (nut tart) or Basler Läckerli (local honey and almond cookies).
- Bratwurst: A hearty German sausage served hot on a bun with mustard.
- Mulled Wine (Glühwein): Enjoy a hot cup of spiced wine to warm up on a chilly evening.
2. Barfüsserplatz Christmas Market
- Location: Situated in the heart of Basel’s Old Town, this market is located in the Barfüsserplatz.
- Dates & Opening Times: This market runs from November 28 to December 23, 2024, with the usual opening hours of 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily.

- Chestnuts: Roasted chestnuts are a popular winter snack that you can enjoy as you stroll through the market.
- Swiss Chocolate: Don’t miss out on Swiss chocolate treats, from truffles to chocolate-covered nuts.
