Baked Cake Maple Bacon Donuts baked in the oven, dipped into a 2 ingredient maple glaze and topped with crispy bacon pieces.
I can still remember the first time I had maple syrup with waffles and bacon. It was in Toronto in 1997. Yes I remember the year because that´s when I traveled from South Africa to Canada to visit my sister who was studying there at that time to become a teacher.
I loved it. Thus started my love affair with anything cake dough-like topped with bacon and maple (or my old time favourite South African version golden!) syrup… Yummers!
This might be the easiest donut recipe you´ve ever tried. Ever heard of Food Hacks? Well this is one of them. Use cake batter (store bought in a box) to make your baked donuts. Isn´t that just the best news you´ve heard all week!?
No deep fryer needed, no proofing needed, no measuring ingredients, hardly any mess. Amazing no!? I used the McEnnedy “Shake Donuts” brand from Lidl (a German chain supermarket that´s also here in Spain), but you can easily use any regular cake mix in a box too. It´ll work too!
To top these off, I made a very easy maple glaze with just 2 ingredients:
- Confectioners (Icing) Sugar, and
- Pure Maple Syrip.
That´s it! Then top it off with fried (crispy – it´s gotta be crispy!) bacon pieces and you´ve got yourself a homemade (non fried) maple bacon donut!
Ingredients
- cake or baked donut mix
- crispy fried pieces of bacon
- confectioners sugar
- maple syrup
Instructions
- Prepare a donut pan by brushing melted butter or olive oil (or a non stick spray) all over the holes to make sure the cake batter does not stick.
- Prepare your cake / donut batter according to the package instructions.
- Fill the donut holes until almost the top with the cake / donut batter.
- Bake for 15 - 20 minutes in a pre-heated oven @ 360ºF / 180ºC.
- Allow to cool slightly, remove from the donut pan and dip into the maple glaze (method below).
- Lastly top with fried crispy bacon pieces. WARNING: These are super yummy!
- Mix 1/4 cup confectioners sugar with 3 tablespoons maple syrup.
- Whisk well. Add more maple syrup if the mixture is too thick, or more confectioners sugar if the mixture is too runny!
Valentine´s Day came, and Valentine´s Day went. Me and hubby decided to go watch a movie on Saturday night because we were invited for lunch by the “Family-in-Spanish-law” for a paella (pronounced P-A-E-J-A – as I´ve been told more times that I can count since moving here to Spain) because it was my Father-in-Law´s birthday. They (the in laws) make the best paella!
Anyway the plan was for the kids to stay there while we went out for our movie (V-day) date.
About the movie. The Revenant. It was gruesome.. EEK! We walked out of the movie theatre after 30 minutes, right after a wild bear attacked poor old Leonardo (di Caprio). Every terrifying bit of it! If you love watching horror films, this wouldn´t be a big deal for you, but for me it was, and I didnt like it at all!
On Sunday (the actual V-day) we went for coffee with friends whom are visiting here from Denmark and the UK. When we got home all I wanted to do is climb under my blanky and watch a movie on Netflix. Anyone else can relate..?
So guys, any special plans for the week ahead..? Did you do anything special for V-day? If so, PLEASE do share it with us in the comment section.. 🙂
Happy Week Guys!!
